I am looking at the Pentair pump products, but am confused on what model would work best. I have a 14,400 gallon pool and am leaning towards a variable speed, unless a two speed is a better option. I am looking for excellent circulation, with energy usage a big factor.

Spend the money now on a Variable Speed pump. Energy savings will help amortize the cost of the new Main Pump over the lifetime of its service.
Winter time savings are especially good as the lack of ambient heat from the sun means that the circulation of the pool water can be reduced a bit and the pump will not have to run as long and at as high an RPM. Spring / Summer will still see benefits but the real savings are not until the colder months. I have installed the Intelliflow VS's for many of my clients and have heard that they can save up to 100 dollars per month on energy costs. Also, with the Intelliflow VS there is an "onboard" controller that allows completely independent scheduling of start /stop times and the speeds that the pump will run during those times. It will easily provide full water turnover daily with that volume of water. I install them on 20 K + gallon pools with no issues.
