Pentair 4 yr old Minimax heater keeps turning off (E05) but i am told all parts are ok.

My 4 year old heater will run for 24 minutes then turn off with an error code of E05.

I can restart and it will last 18 minutes then turn off with same code of E05.

I can restart again and again and the time it will stay on dimishes each time....it will last for 14 minutes then only 10 minutes always getting the E05 code.

2 pool service guys who claim they know this heater well tell me all the parts check out fine...ignition, fan, hoses are clear etc.

It does have a bad problem with rust and corrusion eventough it is only 4 years old and both pool guys think this must be the problem.

Could the rust and corrusion be causing it to turn off?

What should i tell my pool service guy to double check?

Hi, Gina.

I have also posted your question in the heater forum at http://poolfyi.com/forum/topics/pentair-4-yr-old-minimax-heater-kee... so that you can get more feedback on your question.

Best wishes,

Kris

On the Minimax line of heaters, E05 refers to an ignition of flame failure.  If it's a standard Minimax, there is a flame sensor that tells the board the burner is lit.  If it's a LoNOx unit, the ingiter is what tells the board the burner is lit.

For flame sensors, they should check that it's clean and nothing is touching the sensor.

For LoNOx units, the igniter should be replaced.

For both, they should test the gas pressure while the unit is running to be sure it has the proper gas supply.  They should have a manometer for this.

thanks!  The service guy is coming back today and i will tell him what you suggested.

Are the flame sensors in the burner tray?

If so, the problem is that the burner tray is sooo rusted and corrouded he is afraid if he pulls it out, he won't be able to get it back in as everything seems to be crumbling.  He is trying to clean it out with long tools reaching in behind the panel.

Yes, the flame sensor is in the burner tray.  He should be able to only remove the flame sensor and leave the burner tray intact.  The sensor can sometimes just be cleaned, and the burner's flame should be blue.

Great information.  Thanks so much. I will ask/tell my service guy when he gets here.

This site rules.  Troublefreepool.com sucks...

Is there a way i can locate a Pentair approved 'service guy' in my area?  zip 92647

Huntington Beach Calif

Yes there is! Pentair has an online Dealer Locator that only takes a few seconds to use. It is located at http://www.pentairpartners.com/dealerlocator/dealerlocatorlist.aspx

In the "Purpose" drop down, select "Service Only".

Put in your Zip code in the "Postal" box.

You can Choose a distance from 10 to 100 miles.

And in the "Select a product line" area, select "Heaters".

The results should give you quite a few dealers in your area that service Pentair heaters.  I just did the search for the 10 mile range, and it returned 7 dealers in your area (4-11 miles).
