Phosphates are kinda like algae food.  If the chlorine is kept high enough, everything is fine.  If you ever get algae or are on the edge, the phosphates almost act like fertilizer.

One product I have seen work first hand is phosfree.

Ben defined them exactly. In our retail store PhosFree is our go to product but it isn't right for everyone.  Read the directions and use exactly as it says.  Some customers do not like having to keep such a close watch on their filter pressure so then we will use Orenda.  If the phosphate level is really high they may have to repeat the intial PhosFree treatment several times.  Orenda was designed for high level phosphate removal.  Only drawback to the Orenda is the price, it is about double the price of PhosFree (in our area).
