Refresh Your Backyard Retreat
There’s no doubt that pools are an invaluable addition to a home, from a quick dip to swimming laps. However, with some thoughtful and well-placed furniture and accents, you can transform your poolscape into a true getaway for family and friends.
Know Your Wants and Needs
As a first step, take inventory of what you already have in terms of furniture. Does it meet your needs? Do you like it? Does it need to be replaced or just spruced up a bit?
If you intend to start over, there are a variety of things to consider. You will want to think about which price point works best for your budget. Also, decide how long and how often your furniture will be in use. After looking at these factors, you may want to go with something that is functional and affordable or make an investment in high-end furniture that will last a while.
Just do your homework first. That way, you will know how much space you intend to fill and how many pieces you need. You can also look at which colors may be suitable for your poolscape. Finally, define which type of atmosphere you hope to set. One arrangement might be better for entertaining the adults in your life, while another screams family fun. So, be clear on how your dream space should look.
Perk Up Your Patio Set
If you really like what you already have, you might consider sprucing it up or adding to it. Most plastic, polymer, resin, wicker, metal and even wooden furniture can be refreshed with spray paint that can withstand the elements. Just about every home-improvement or do-it-yourself store has information and supplies.
Another idea to liven up what you already have is to purchase new cushions or recover your existing ones. Saggy cushions with zipper covers might just need new pillow forms. Often a pop of color or bold pattern can transform your poolscape. There are dozens of colors and coordinating prints to choose from that are made from material intended specifically for the great outdoors.
Just Hanging Around
You may want to consider a few hammocks as a fun addition to your poolscape. They have gained in popularity and are now readily available in nearly every color of the rainbow. You can choose models with free-standing frames or with straps which suspend from trees. Plus, you have the option of hammocks with space for one or two people. Talk about cozy!
Pick up a set of stacking plastic or resin tables for your poolside. Get a funky new umbrella. If you’re in a very windy area, you can anchor your umbrella by pouring wet concrete into a container and setting the umbrella pole into it. Brace it while it hardens. Remember if the umbrella goes in the center of a table, DO NOT add a cement base unless the umbrella is in place!
Now that you’ve figured out the furniture, you might want to include a few “extras” to make your pool even more of a relaxing retreat. Adding a few colorful potted plants and luxurious greenery can enhance the resort feel. You may even want to splurge on a new grill for all the BBQs you’ll have in your revamped backyard
Whatever you decide, think of your pool area as a bonus room to your house and make the most of it!
