Intellichem Help

I have a Pentair Intellichem, Intelliflo VSF, Easy Touch, and Intellichlor IC40 on my 10,515 gallon Salt Pool.

Over the last few week my system has been acting very weird. It has worked for the last 7 months flawlessly (installed then).

Now when ORP falls below the set point the Intellichlor kicks on just like it is supposed to. The problem is that when the Intellichlor is running the ORP drops versus goes up. It seems to drop about 5mv every 5-10 min. The Intellichlor is working and making chlorine as it now has 5ppm in the pool but my ORP is in the low 500’s.

When I shut off the Intellichlor the ORP begins to rise over the course of the next 24 hours. It will get into the high 600’s by tomorrow afternoon/evening.

Then eventually as the chlorine reduces it will drop in ORP and the cycle happens again.

Why would the ORP drop only when the salt cell runs and rise when it shuts off? I have looked everywhere but can’t seem to figure it out. I spent hours on the phone with tech support and besides sending out a tech (next week) they can’t figure it out either. The weird thing is that this just started happening over the last few weeks.

Pool is balanced...

TA - 90
CYA - 45
CH - 420
FC - 5
Salt - 3800
PH - 7.5

Appreciate any insight anyone may have.

Phil

If the sensor was replaced and did not correct the issue, it may be the board that may not be reading the sensor correctly, also make sure the sensor has been cleaned recently, if the tech has an issue with figuring out what could be wrong, they are more than welcome to contact us at 1-800-831-7133

I’ll let the tech know if he has issues troubleshooting.

I did clean both the ORP and PH sensor, along with the screen filter when this first started happening.

It just seems really weird why the chlorine generator is having the exact opposite affect on ORP? Any chance there might be something wrong with the Intellichlor producing an electrical current or too much Hydrogen affecting ORP? The reason I ask is that the ORP jumps right back up when the salt cell is turned off (over the next 12-24 hours). I am currently at 685 ORP with 2ppm Chlorine after the cell hasn’t run for two days.

I have an almost identical configuration, and had a similar problem of a day of over-chlorination where ORP never rose to the setpoint, followed by a few days with ORP over the setpoint. Pentair customer support suggested I set a mixing time of 30 minutes. To do this, I had to change the dosing to timed. I also set a Limit, so the IC40 would not dose more than 3 hours per 10 hour pump session. So far, it seems to be working.
